Children's Book Printing: A Practical Guide to CPSIA and EN-71 Safety Compliance


Safety compliance is the first specification in children's book production — not the last. Because young readers chew, lick, and roughly handle everything within reach, children's books are regulated more strictly than any other print product. In the United States, the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA) limits lead and phthalates in paper, board, and coatings for products intended for children twelve and under, and requires a permanent tracking label. In the European Union, the EN-71 toy safety standard governs children's books — particularly interactive and board books — with Part 3 testing the migration of heavy metals if a child mouths the book. A CE mark may be required for EU market access.

Inks, Papers, and Boards That Pass Inspection

Material selection determines whether a book clears testing. Non-toxic, soy-based inks are strongly preferred over petroleum-based inks because they emit lower VOCs and are far easier to certify. For picture book interiors, paper weights of 120-170 gsm prevent ink show-through and withstand frequent page-turning, while board books use paperboard of 400 gsm or more for tear resistance. Covers are typically laminated with high-quality polypropylene film — anti-scuff matte is the professional standard for durability, while gloss makes colors pop but shows fingerprints. Low-VOC, child-safe adhesives complete the material list.

Bible Paper: The Engineering Behind Ultra-Thin, Ultra-Strong Pages


A Bible that fits comfortably in one hand is one of the quieter engineering feats in print production. Standard book paper runs 60-100 gsm; Bible paper drops to 20-40 gsm. Yet it still has to stay opaque, resist tearing, and hold fine type without ghosting. That combination of demands makes Bible paper a distinct material category, not simply "thinner paper."

Opacity: the fight against show-through

The main challenge with thin papers is text bleeding through from the reverse side. Bible grades are engineered for opacity above 94%: the fiber blend is balanced with mineral fillers such as titanium dioxide and calcium carbonate, which scatter light and block show-through. This is why Bible paper feels smooth yet dense — the fillers, not the fibers, carry much of the weight.
