Laser Marking Moves Onto the Box: Packaging Decoration Without Plates or Ink


An e-commerce packaging concept from Mondi has taken the German Packaging Award 2026 in the sustainability category, and the technology at its core deserves attention well beyond the awards circuit. The concept pairs a corrugated outer box with recyclable flexible packaging that is decorated directly by laser — no printing plates, no inks, no conventional printing step in the line.

Why Laser Marking Is Interesting Now

Laser marking works by altering the surface of the material itself: the beam creates contrast by engraving, etching, or changing the colour of the substrate. Because there is no image carrier, artwork changes are instant — a file update is a file update, with zero plate costs and zero makeready. The same system can mark a QR code, a shipping address, a batch code, or a promotional message on every single parcel without slowing down. For e-commerce, where no two parcels are identical, inline variable marking has obvious appeal.

The Sustainability Arithmetic

Removing plates and inks simplifies the recycling story. There is no printed decoration to separate from the fibre, the packaging can be built from bio-based feedstocks or post-consumer recycled content, and supply chains gain agility because artwork changes no longer mean scrapping obsolete printed stock. The award jury highlighted exactly this potential for more sustainable packaging.

What It Does Not Replace

Laser marking is not a threat to full-colour brand packaging. Complex graphics, brand colours, and photorealistic detail still belong to conventional printing — flexo, offset, or digital. The laser's strength is simpler, mostly monochrome decoration, functional marking, and the long tail of short-run e-commerce work where speed and variability matter more than colour richness. The two technologies will sit side by side, chosen by the job.

What the Signal Means

The award puts a marker in the ground: the definition of 'printed packaging' is widening, and converters that treat decoration as a printing-only problem may miss where the work is heading. Watching laser direct marking on packaging — its speed, substrate range, and cost curve — is becoming part of understanding where the industry's next efficiency gains come from.

Which packaging applications are best suited to laser marking, and which will stay with ink for the foreseeable future? The answer will shape how production lines are configured over the next few years.
