What each finish does
Soft-touch is a matte laminate film applied over the whole cover. Spot UV is a liquid varnish cured by ultraviolet light and printed only on selected areas. It sits on top of the printed sheet, adding a raised glossy patch that contrasts with the surrounding surface.

Soft-touch marks easily and shows scuffs on light colors, so it needs a scuff-resistant coating on heavy-use products. Spot UV is tougher in wear but reveals dust and smudges on large glossy areas. Cost follows coverage: a full soft-touch laminate is priced by area, while spot UV adds a plate and a print pass for the varnish layer.
Which to pick
Ask what the product does. A business presentation folder handled daily benefits from soft-touch durability and a quiet look. A retail book cover competing for attention earns more from a contrast gloss spot. Testing both on the same printed sheet remains the reliable way to decide, because ink and paper change how each finish reads.
