Every printed color comes from one of two systems: process color, which builds the image from overlapping dots of cyan, magenta, yellow and black, or spot color, which uses a single premixed ink applied straight from the ink fountain. The two behave differently on press, and picking the right one decides color accuracy, consistency and cost.
How process color works
Process printing reproduces photographs and gradients by screening each of the four inks into tiny dots. Seen from reading distance the dots blend into continuous tones. Because every color in the job is assembled from the same four inks, a full-color photo and a soft gradient can be printed in one pass. The limit is accuracy: some colors, such as bright orange, vivid green and deep purple, sit outside what four inks can mix, and the result is an approximation that can drift between runs.
What spot color adds
A spot color is ink mixed in advance to a fixed recipe and applied as a solid layer. It does not rely on dot overlap, so large flat areas print evenly and two sheets from different runs match closely. The Pantone Matching System is the shared vocabulary for ordering these inks by number. Brands use spot inks for logos and identity colors so the same red or blue appears on business cards, packaging and signage without guesswork.
Where each earns its place
Photographic work, brochures with product shots and any job with smooth gradients should run as CMYK. Jobs built on one or two brand colors, or with large solid panels of the same shade, benefit from a spot ink. Mixed jobs are common: CMYK for the images plus a fifth unit printing a spot color for the logo. Presses with five or six units run this in a single pass; with four units the spot color means a second pass or a plate change, which adds time.
Questions worth asking before quoting
Ask how many printing units the press has, whether the target color can be reached with CMYK on the chosen paper, and how the printer plans to handle a second pass if one is needed. Coated stock reproduces both systems more predictably than uncoated, where absorbent fiber shifts the final shade. A printed proof remains the only reliable preview, because a screen shows color in light while ink shows color in reflected light.
