The printing methods used for PVC bags differ significantly from those used on paper or cardboard. Because PVC is a non-porous plastic surface, standard ink absorption does not work the same way. Instead, manufacturers rely on screen printing and flexographic printing as the two primary techniques.

Screen printing remains the most common method for PVC bag production. A fine mesh stencil transfers ink directly onto the plastic surface, allowing for bold, opaque colors that stand out. PVC is chemically inert, meaning standard water-based inks will bead up and flake off after drying. Professional PVC bag printers use solvent-based inks that partially dissolve the top layer of the plastic, creating a chemical bond as the solvent evaporates.

UV-cured inks have also gained traction in recent years. These inks contain monomers that cross-link into a solid film when exposed to ultraviolet light. Common Defects to Watch For

  • **Registration accuracy**: Misaligned colors in multi-color prints indicate poor press setup or worn plates. The gap between color separations should not exceed 0.5 mm on a standard bag.
  • **Ink adhesion test**: A simple tape-pull test—applying masking tape to the printed area and peeling it off—will reveal whether the ink is properly cured. If ink transfers to the tape, the batch needs rework.
  • **Seam strength**: The heat-sealed edges of PVC bags are the weakest point. A good seal should withstand moderate tension without separating. Manufacturers that use temperature-controlled impulse sealers produce consistently stronger seams than those using uncontrolled hot-bar methods.
