Cold Foil: Metallic Effects Straight From the Press


Metallic print often brings to mind hot foil stamping: a heated die, a sheet of foil, pressure, and a bright shine pressed into the page. Cold foil reaches a similar visual result by a completely different route, one that runs inline on the printing press.

How cold foil transfers

The process starts with an adhesive printed onto the sheet, in exactly the shape of the metallic area. That adhesive is a printing unit's job, so it can carry fine detail and halftones like any other ink. A thin metallic foil film is then pressed against the wet adhesive as the sheet travels through the press. Where adhesive sits, the foil sticks. A UV lamp cures the adhesive inside the press, and the carrier film is stripped away with the foil left only where it was wanted.

What it does better than hot foil

Because the pattern comes from a printed form rather than an engraved die, cold foil handles fine lines, small type, gradients and halftone metallic images that would be difficult or impossible to stamp. There is no die to engrave and no heat to control, and the foil is applied inline, so no separate finishing pass is needed. That makes it economical for shorter runs and for designs that change often.

Where hot foil still wins

Hot foil stamping presses the metal into the sheet, so it sits above the surface with a bright, mirror-like finish and real dimension. Cold foil lies flatter and usually reads as a softer metallic sheen. Silver is the standard cold foil color, and other hues are created by printing transparent inks over the silver. Brightness is also sensitive to the substrate, since the adhesive and foil sit best on a smooth coated sheet, while rough uncoated stocks scatter light and dull the effect.

Designing for it

Artwork for cold foil works best when the metallic area is defined as its own element rather than a texture spread across the page. A logo, a title, a pattern of lines all transfer cleanly. Very large solid metallic areas can show the limits of the process more than fine work does. As with any special finish, a screen proof only tells part of the story, since no monitor carries the actual metallic reflection, and a physical sample on the chosen stock is the only way to judge the result. The reputation of book printing is built on advanced manufacturing facilities and strict quality control.
