Common Pre-Press Issues in Catalog and Brochure Printing

Preparing a catalog or brochure for printing requires careful attention to pre-press details. Many production problems can be avoided by following standardized guidelines. Below is a clear checklist to help ensure your files are fully print-ready.

1. Standard Artwork Size
The recommended artwork size is 291 × 426 mm, which includes a 3 mm bleed on all sides. Add a center guideline to properly divide the layout into two pages.

2. Finished Catalog Size
The most common finished size for catalogs is 285 × 210 mm.

3. Layout Safety Margins
Keep all text and critical design elements at least 5 mm inside the trim line to ensure clean, accurate cutting and a professional final appearance.

4. Common Catalog Formats
• Horizontal: 285 × 210 mm
• Vertical: 210 × 285 mm
• Square: 210 × 210 mm or 280 × 280 mm

5. Accepted Design Software
We currently accept files created in CorelDRAW, Illustrator, FreeHand, and Photoshop. All text must be converted to curves/outlines before submission to avoid font compatibility issues.

6. File Format Requirements
• CorelDRAW: Save as CDR; convert special effects to bitmap; resolution at least 350 dpi
• Illustrator / FreeHand: Save as EPS; include all linked images
• Photoshop: Save as TIF or JPG; resolution 350 dpi or higher

7. Color Mode
All design files must be created in CMYK color mode to ensure accurate printing results.

8. Minimum Line Thickness
Lines thinner than 0.076 mm may not print correctly. Use at least 0.076 mm.

9. Minimum Color Value
Avoid using color values below 8%, as the colors may not appear on the final print.

10. Color Guidelines and Print Variations
• Screen or desktop printer colors should not be used as the final reference for print output.
• Avoid spot colors for general filling; always follow CMYK values.
• Slight color variations between print runs are normal, especially for brown, dark green, and dark purple tones.
• For black text, avoid rich black (C100 M100 Y100 K100).
• Keep total ink coverage below 250% in large areas to prevent ink transfer issues.
