Paper Weight and Thickness: A Practical Guide for Print Buyers

Understanding Paper Weight

Paper weight is one of the most confusing aspects of print buying. Different regions use different systems, and the same number can mean different things depending on the paper type.

### GSM — The Universal Standard GSM (grams per square meter) is the weight of one square meter of paper. This is the most consistent measurement across paper types.

  • 80-100 GSM: Standard copy paper. Used for internal documents, letterheads.
  • 100-120 GSM: Lightweight but quality feel. Good for booklet interiors.
  • 128-150 GSM: Brochure interior paper. Sturdy enough for double-sided printing.
  • 170-200 GSM: High-quality flyers and report covers.
  • 250-300 GSM: Typical postcard and business card weight. Rigid but flexible.
  • 350-400 GSM: Heavy card stock for premium business cards and packaging.

### Paper Thickness Weight doesn't always equal thickness. A coated 250 GSM paper can be thinner than an uncoated 250 GSM because the coating fills surface gaps.

Always request a paper sample (called a "dummy") before committing to a large print run. The feel in your hand tells you more than a spec sheet ever will.

### Grain Direction Paper fibers align during manufacturing. Fold with the grain for clean edges; fold against it and cracks appear. For bound books, the grain should run parallel to the spine for durability.

Choosing the right paper weight saves money and improves the final product. When in doubt, order a sample pack from your printer.
